I adore the quality in men (better a frugalite than a spendthrift!) - most of the time. Then something like receiving a very nice sum of unexpected money from the government happens and what follows is several weeks worth of
To understand this dilemma, you first have to understand what kind of people TH and I are. We are most definitely not frivolous spenders. TH had perhaps a better financial grounding than I did growing up but the bottom line is, we don't have expensive hobbies and our leisure activities tend to run more toward the 'DVD and popcorn' variety. We have already decided the portion of money we are getting this month will be spent on the house (the specifics of which is another debate for another day! LOL) but we are also due a smaller portion of money in April. Talented Hubby surprised me by suggesting we might be able to split this money down the middle for our own personal spending.
Without going into specifics, it equates to a comfy amount. TH recently bought his 'dream' camera, paid for in cash with the earnings from his previous exhibition and online image sales, so his Extra Special Thing just got crossed off his list. I, on the other hand, don't readily get so much money in one lump sum and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it. It would be enough for a good general sewing machine or a clothes-buying spree. I could do some real damage on Amazon or Etsy with it too, LOL. But I don't have that many personal 'wants/needs' at the moment. About the only thing that springs to mind is that I've wanted a decent desk for a while now (I currently blog at the dining table).
If we decide that yes, we will split this smaller payment in April and each have some spending money, I want to be wise about it. My initial thought was that a sewing machine would be beneficial to the household as a whole, and not just me, so its priority goes up a few notches - but it's a want, not a need - and I already have a sewing machine. It was third or fourth hand and I never worked out how to do anything more basic than straight and triple-stitch (thank God this didn't have any curves!) but it's in working order and probably totally fine for my sporadic craft attempts. It would be lovely to have a new machine though, and I would gift the old one to someone who needs it. We bought a large-screen TV last year with money we'd saved specifically for that purpose, so that was another Extra Special Thing ticked off. TiVo is something I've been considering - TH could care less, LOL - and this amount of personal spending money would get me three-quarters of the way there (by the way, sell me on TiVo. We've only just had it come to Australia in the last few months. Good idea? Bad idea? Best features?)
Our other sum of money - including our furniture fund - will cover things like a utility cupboard and a couple of small pieces to help organize the entryway, so 'my' money doesn't have to get put aside for that, which is nice. Brand new books in the mail is a delight I'm sure you're all able to understand, LOL, and I might still indulge in one or two, but certainly not the entire amount.
As for my thirtieth birthday (which isn't until October) - Talented Hubby and I have already considered including a weekend away using some of March's money, and we could kill two birds with one stone and do this in October, making it a 'big deal' birthday thing. I quite like that idea. I could also save this spending money for that weekend (though that will be decidely more difficult, LOL).
Auuugh - what would you do, or buy, if you suddenly had several hundred dollars to spend? For the purposes of this exercise you are not allowed to pay off extra on the mortgage (which we're also doing with the larger sum of money) or put it toward bills. What personal wants have you been hankering over lately?

TiVo? SEEMS like a good idea. It will record your movies for later watching, it will record EVERY episode of your favourite wekly programs, it will record, record, record. But think about this for a minute. You'll have all those pre-recorded shows that you'll be wanting to watch. There'll be stuff currently on TV that you'll be wanting to watch. There'll be housework, shopping, cooking, kids to get to and from school, activities. Meanwhile your recording is still going on........
WHEN will you have time to watch this much?
That's my view. Anyone else with a positive view, feel free to say so here.
If I had an unexpected bonus, I would buy a digital TV so that I no longer need my set top box, my current TV is quite old and makes a few funny crackling noises now and then. (I'll be getting the government bonus, but not having any dependent children means a much smaller amount for me. Hubby doesn't qualify for one as he doesn't pay tax on his centrelink allowance)
My theory on TiVo goes something like this: I can set up a 'season's pass' to my favourite shows and then actually go to bed at a decent hour! I know, that's a poor, poor excuse, and TV isn't a god, etc etc. But there have been a LOT of programs lately that I've stumbled across on the ABC that I've really liked - Lost in Austen the other night and that other series set in similar time before that...on Sundays - that I would never have come across otherwise. Makes me wonder what I'm missing the rest of the time. I think with TiVo you can choose to record anything whose description matches certain words you input, such as 'Austen' or 'Victorian' or 'Craft' or whatnot. I kind of like that idea :)
The other thing that bothers me and that TiVo would 'fix' would be when stations decide to switch days/times without advertising it. I missed a few episodes of Eli Stone because of that.
I'm not a TV hound, not really, but I do enjoy my shows. My schedule at the moment allows (pretty much) for afternoons to be free, but usually when the shows are on (evenings) I'm crazy busy, so this way, I can control when I watch them. I'm also a bit intrigued by the movies-on-demand feature. We already do something similar with TH's PS3, which is also a browser which can download games/songs from the net.
Still, its a lot of money...
So it could turn out to be quite a good idea for you. Not for me though. I'd be recording things to watch that would never get seen, just like many of the dvd's I now have. L doesn't like them, or isn't in the mood to watch them, or he's sick of all this crap...we end up watching a lot of documentaries, time team, which is quite good, and the news and weather, but only the bits of news he wants to see. Anything else, no matter how newsworthy, gets flipped off, to another channel. It's really not worth fighting over, although I do get royally p***ed off sometimes and put a dvd into the laptop, then of course he decides it's time to talk........blaaagh!
We are in a similar situtaion, receiving money now and again in April - what are we going to do? Well apart from a couple of things like get new brakes on the car and putting some aside for Chrissy, I have no idea either!
We do have Foxtel IQ so TiVo is basically a similar thing and its great and I love it, I can watch my shows when I want and not when the TV guide says to and all at a touch of a button. I saw Lost in Austen too and thought it was ok but Colin Firth is the only Darcy for me...
We have our wedding anniversary coming up so we thought on a weekend away would be nice and not having to worry about budget.
I cannot buy things just because, we are quite careful spenders because of our budget and when we get money like this it is hard to think of what to do with it!
If I had some money...I do not have a sewing machine right now. I just want something basic though and the one I have been looking at is less than $100(american). I really need clothes. Oh...then there's my great desire for a Kitchen Aid Mixer. There's always books and candles should there be some small change left over.
Thia...
Oooooh, kitchen aid mixerrrrrrr....
Those kind of epitomise kitchen complication to me though, LOL. I don't make loaf after loaf of bread (and I have a breadmaker if I feel inclined) and a cake batter in a regular bowl only dirties that and perhaps a spoon...but they're shiny! And really cool!
(I have a problem with wanting new kitchen appliances, LOL)
Kitchen gadgetry is quite tempting, that is for sure. Sometimes I don't know if I read food blogs for the recipes or pictures of gadgets.
Thanks for sharing.
