Okay, so I'm a year or two behind the rest of the known world, but I've always been a slow starter!
I would also like to take this opportunity to "thank" Stefne Miller for pushing me over the cliff edge in regards to this book. Dishes are once again being ignored, as is Mt Washmore. Of course I'd heard of it before last week - hard to ignore all the soulful Edward posters in the stores and the recent release of "Twilight" the movie down here - but I pooh-poohed the entire phenomenon in much the same way as I scoffed at Harry Potter.
Well, Ms Meyer, you win. Your publisher's freaky viral marketing and the fact that Forks high school is the new Hogwarts sucked me RIGHT THE WAY IN.
I didn't even wait for a library copy - I bought a new book on a whim when I saw it on the store shelf last Friday. Co-incidentally mere HOURS after Stefne lauded Edward's praises to me from the Twittertops.
I am embarrassingly enthralled.

Just be warned. Your life will seem dull and sucky in comparison. And you will NOT want to leave the world of Twilight. Also... MAKE SURE you have book 2 already when there's any possibility of you finishing book 1. Because there is no way you'll last if it's 10pm and you NEED to find out what happens next, and you don't have the next book.
Ahhh... I guess we'll see you in a week (or few) when you're done with all four books. No one ate at my house, the laundry didn't get done, I barely checked email. Sorry, kids, can't help ya, I'm not really here - I'm in Forks, WA.
LOL Kay...I'm about a quarter from the end of book 1, and I can see it's working its way up to a cliffhanger...I'm out and about tomorrow, so will pick up (at least) New Moon. Expensive obsession this! I'm not used to buying new books but no way I'm waiting for the multitudes to cycle through the library waiting list until it gets to me!!!
By my calculations, book 1 completed tomorrow night. Poor Dr Quinn...am one disc (four eps) away from finishing Season 2 and I'm having SUCH a hard time switching between Sully and Edward. Hmmm, mountain man vs mountain lion eater. Cuts things up with tomahawk vs cuts things up with teeth. One likes wolves, one hates them.
I'm so torn!!! LOL.

Wendy - Um, I haven't read the 2nd, 3rd or 4th books. Now I know more or less what happens to Bella and Edward's relationship. It kind of spoils it, to be honest.
I couldn't finish reading Nicky's speech, mostly because I didn't want to find out any more secrets, but I can guess at what you/she means by the first couple of paragraphs until the spoilers came up.
Yes, it's vampires. Yes, it focusses on beauty rather than personality a lot of the time. But as far as I can see, as little as I am into the series (still just 3/4 way into first book) it's pretty harmless. No worse (on a fantasy scale anyway) than Harry Potter.
I think we're all grown ups and can differentiate between what's morally okay and what's not - so the whole 'this sends wrong message to teens' isn't so much of a prob to me. Would I let my daughter read this (she could, at 7) - no. Prob not for many years. But as much as hype surrounding the series has kind of taken on a life of its own, it's still just a fiction book.

P.S. In case it wasn't clear, I'm actively pushing the slower, more romantic examples of grown up relationships to my daughter. So it's all about Anne of Green Gables, Jane Austen movies, Dr Quinn etc. She loves all these as much as I do. She's also reading Harry Potter (onto 2nd book) which I think is EXCELLENT considering she's really just discovered reading for pleasure this school year.
So the more grown up aspects of Bella/Edward are certainly NOT something I would allow her to get involved with NOW, but when she's older? Probably. It's all about balance.
